They started out full of confidence in themselves and in what they could accomplish in freedom. Then, a few generations later, parents in growing numbers decided to turn the education of their children over to the government, which in turn taught those children what a smart thing that was because government cares for them so much.

  1. There is no "American public school system". Outside of the smallest jurisdictions, there is no "x county" or "y city" school system.

Some American public schools are failing, some are not. Is the Bronx High School of Science, which produced more Nobel laureates than a lot of sovereign states, failing? I can think of half a dozen public high schools in Washington, DC, and the suburban and exurban counties that are doing splendidly. I doubt any is more than ten miles from some pretty bad high school; but I have already said there is no "the public school system".

  2. Well, Philadelphia has what it calls a school system. And Albert Jay Nock wrote a great book called The System of Education in the United Staes (which pretty much foresaw what has happened to higher education. And we have a Department of Education. But you are right that we do not some monolithic system overall.
