Each day during the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery, sends an update to faculty and staff about pandemic response and priorities. Stay up to date with us.
Hi Frank -- I was hoping to get the inside on what's happening at the hospital, what's the status of surgery, the employee morale there, what is he learning from other hospitals that he can create wisdom from and share with his staff, and make things better.
Instead, he went outside his purview, and spoke of the White House staff who got the virus. We all saw the meetings where Fauci, Pense, Trump, et al, were too close and not wearing masks. M & I would cringe at this. What a terrible example. There's no gloating to speak of on the left or the right that I have heard, but maybe Dr. Smith overheard a debate on a unit, when someone said that someone was gloating.
It would be a horrible tragedy if we lost Pense or Fauci to the virus because of the carelessness and callousness within the administration -- and that's not left or right either. Now that those two have announced that they will no longer not take proper precautions, the nation does not have to cringe so much.
This is a similar problem to having economic theorists speak about epidemiology, virologists speaking about who should die.
