I only knew of Robert Shaw as an actor. I did not know he was also a writer. I do remember him being eaten by the shark in Jaws.

I read The Hiding Place some years ago and I liked it. I also liked Shaw's play The Man in the Glass Booth. Shaw was said to have written the best scene in Jaws. As I heard it, Shaw, a heavy drinker, went up to Steven Spielberg, who was a young director at the time, and told him the movie was shit, but an American sailor had told him of being in the water for five days with sharks after the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Shaw then wrote the scene with his character explaining why he won't wear a lifejacket in the water again. I liked the scene and I liked the film until they introduced the mechanical shark. I would have loved to seen Shaw and Sean Connery on the stage in The Hiding Place. They appeared together in From Russia From Russia and performed the best fight scene in a film, in my view. They also appeared together in Robin and Marian, with Connery as an aging Robin Hood and Shaw as an aging Sheriff of Nottingham. The two fight with broad swords, offering another fine fight scene. Richard Lester, the film's director, said he scouted locations in the UK with Shaw and Connery. Shaw was a mean drunk and started fights in pubs, which Connery would stop, using his popularity and strong presence. Shaw was a fine actor as well as a fine writer.
