Many associate João with the kitsch new wave of the 1960s, epitomized by hedonistic Stan Getz saxophone solos, saccharine jazz, and cringey lyrics in English. Here, I will present an altogether different persona and demonstrate that the João I love, who played only solo concerts, could not be further from his superficial caricature. He was, in fact, a countercultural aesthetic monk.
