The old trope of life as a stage on which we strut and fret achieved in Pessoa one of its greatest consecrations. It is epitomised in his version of Macbeth’s desperate words about the futility of action: ‘To belong is synonymous with banality. Creeds, ideals, a woman, a profession – all are prisons and shackles. To be is to be free.’
