They're feeling the heat now. They are being brought up on criminal damage charges. The painting had protection, but the frame was indeed damaged.
A point that I cannot verify for the sunflower painting, but sometimes, like with Whistler's Mother, the frame is selected by the artist. You would especially never want to damage that frame.
I'm also not too keen on wasting a can of beans like that. They would not have had to walk too far from the museum to find a homeless person needing food.
