As could be said of many of us--I include myself--he was very fond of the sound of his own voice. It has been forty years or more, but I thought that Harper's suffered a falling off when Michael Kinsley left and Lapham took over.
I do remember fondly the time that Esquire had Michelle Pfeiffer on its cover with the headline "The Woman Who Needs Nothing", and Harper's a month or so later ran the retoucher's bill for the photograph. I suppose that many a critic has had his career and retired without ever publishing such a pointed piece.
