Many years ago Ted Kooser gave me a copy of _Housekeeping_ and told me Robinson was the greatest novelist most people had never heard of. Obviously, she has a poetic quality to her writing -- among other charms -- so I'm not surprised to see that Mr. Appleyard likes her too. And obviously she's not prolific -- two novels in twenty years does not a mega-author make.
_Gilead_ is a book I'm going to have to read .... just as soon as I can get clear of the twenty others I *have* to read for one project or another.
Frank, she is magnificent but I wouldn't use that epithet for anyone.
