I don't read too much crime fiction unless it's also quite literary in style. But that said, I quite like P.D. James. How can someone make a list leaving her out?
When compiling the list, I gave careful consideration to books by a wide variety of authors, including women (of course). I just couldn't come up with any detective novels by female writers that I thought were better than what was on the list.
(I left out PD James because I haven't cared for her work. But I haven't sampled very much of it.)
Of course, had I know it would stir up this controversy, I probably just would have kept my mouth shut!

No, no, David. If you had known it would stir up controversy, you would have to proceed full steam ahead!
