A terrific piece ...

... by Robert Marshall in Slate: The dark legacy of Carlos Castaneda.

And here we thought he was just funning everybody.

I can't pretend to have been other than interested in the hallucinogenic plant realm, but alongside that, something of a lack of interest in what I would see as the occult side of mysticism as opposed to the doctrineless purity of classical eastern mysticism. I think it would probably take too long to explain why but related to the above would be a lack of interest in people like Castaneda, or for that matter the many linked realms of searching for esoteric knowledge that is very dangerous and almost be definition, a dark direction. This including Freemasonry and their degrees of initiation, and whose secrets one swears to uphold under pain of torturous death. All these grandmasters of truth and teachers of hidden knowledge wide open for manipulation of the innocent and naive.
