Frank, what "causes me to tremble" is that so many people are willing to accept the attribute for that statement without any proper citation ..... I am - BY NO MEANS - a Lincoln scholar. But, as I read that statement, I was thinking something similar to what Ferguson is saying about it - it just did not 'sound like' Lincoln to me. That, in itself, would have set me to wondering.
A very good point, Jeff. I had never seen the statement before I read the piece and, like you, my first thought was. "Sure doesn't sound like Lincoln." But one sees an awful lot of people these days taking things solely on authority, which even Thomas Aquinas noted was the weakest reason for believing something.
