I particularly enjoyed the comic dimensions of On Chesil Beach - which many reviewers fail to mention - due to McEwan's exquisite control of tone and diction; due in fact to the incongruity between this tone and the almost banal circumstances described, always a rich source of irony: 'one rhythmically disturbed follicle'.
