It's worth remembering a thought Teresa of Avila addressed to God during one of her own dark nights: "If this is the way you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few of them."
You know, I'm not a person of faith, but I have great respect for those who have it and abide by it. It is a hard thing, faith; it asks a great deal.
For someone who spent her life in service, confronted daily with the lack of compassion - even inhumanity - we human beings afford one another, that Mother Theresa should have doubts and darkness does not surprise me. That she should continue to work, to pray, and abide in her faith - that is a miracle.
Mother Theresa should be commended even more for her service in the face of her doubts. Is there anything more noble on the face of this earth than the person who sacrifices every day, even though they question whether they will ever be rewarded?
