It takes a tough man to write a poem on the eve of his own execution.

    Except he'd probably composed it long before. I remember Dana Gioia telling me about samurai who wrote final poems before committing hari kari, but of course most of them they'd composed long before, they just committed 'em to paper in the final moments. D.G. says there's a book collected of them somewhere, from olden times up to and including final haiku by Japanese officers in WW II.
