Oh no ...

... Sabbatical. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

Those who think blogging is easy, something you can just do in an odd few minutes, ought to consider this post and others like it that seem to pooping upo with increasing frequency. Or maybe they ought to try blogging for a while. At any rate, I think we can all agree that Michael's is, hands down, one of the absolutely best book blogs.

  1. What a loss ... but I hope it's not for too long. Every time I hear of another excellent blog going quiet, it makes me wonder how mine keeps chugging along, especially when I already feel that there are only three hours in a day. I love it though, so for now the blog is wide awake!

There used to be a saying among newspaperpeople, back when their product cost five cents, about the attitude that should be taken toward the product that went something like, "Here's a nickel. Give me the news and spare me your problems." In other words: I'm only interested in the product; I don't need to know what angst it caused you to produce it." (Not that any right-thinking newspaperperson would ever have used the word angst, even if he or she had known it then.) By extension, if blogging is the wave of the future, then do it and let's not hear about your woes. If it causes you pain or burnout or whatever, then don't do it. Nobody cares that you're doing it for no money in your spare moments in the wee hours of the morn at the expense of attention paid to spouse and kiddies.

  3. I beg to differ, Anonymous. You don't care. It does not follow from that nobody cares.

  4. Yes, Frank, you're spot on with your reply. One only has to read all the comments left on GOB's blog (now and in the past) to know that many people REALLY DO CARE about the personal situation of the person behind the posts! :-) Maybe that's why the blogosphere is so different to the mainstream press, where there is not normally this level of interaction with readers.

  5. Frank, I just wanted to say I appreciated your answer to Anonymous' post, regarding Grumpy Old Bookman going on sabbatical. You made the primary point for many of us. On a secondary point, I think Anonymous erred by comparing apples to oranges ..... GOB is a blog, where I have come to expect some occasional bouts of "angst." But, it's not a newspaper, where I prefer the writers' angst be confined to the op-ed page ..... Anyway, that's my "nickel."
