Dave Lull is right ...

Like Dave, I had never heard of Ruth Fainlight, or that she was married to Alan Sillitoe.

I like this:

... if James Joyce is regarded as a pioneer—O! pioneer!—because he writes “scrotumtightening,” all as one word (which would make a great email address, don’t you think?), well, bully for him! And yet of course, he is a wonderful writer—so many examples of tenderness and empathy.
