I've loved Philip Marlowe since I was a teenager and I've seen all of the films made from Raymond Chandler's novels.
In my view, Robert Mitchum would have been the best actor to portray Marlowe if he had played the private detective 20 years earier.
So I think James Garner, who stared in "Marlowe," is the best of the actors who played the detective. He's big like Marlowe, smokes a pipe, plays chess and delivers a mean wisecrack and punch.
Too bad "Marlowe," which was made in 1969 and based on "The Little Sister, was set in what was then modern times. If the film had been set in the 1940s, this would have been the best Chandler film.
But I still think the film is very good and Garner is outstanding
James Garner went on to play Rockford, who is sort of a Marlowe-light P.I.
I wrote an online column about Chandler and Marlowe, which can be read at www.orchardpressmysteries.com/private_detective.html
