And I third it. I've long thought that it's not just a popular/literary distinction that forms the basis of this snobbery, but a West Coast/East Coast divide. This likewise applies to other authors I absolutely adore (and I do likes me some Steinbeck) and who I increasingly present as grand exemplars to confused New York literary types.
