... What's the best job choice for a poet?
I think if I had been able to stay in it - and was better at it than I was - working in the construction business is a good choice. You see something actually taking shape, you meet real people. True, you are pretty tired at the end of the day.
Frank, when were you a construction worker? This I have not heard. Gallery director, editor of medical texts, professor -- those I remember -- but not any tales of your doing manual labor. Enlighten us!

ReplyDeleteBack in the '70s I worked on construction crews building stores. I worked on the Vitamin Specialties store in Roosevelt Mall and on the Bon Appetit store in Spring House. Sand-textured the wall in that all by my lonesome. Doing that kind of work is why I am not a DIYer. I worked with a guy who was a master carpenter, who could eyeball a room with greater accuracy than a laser. Working with him keeping an eye on me, I could do good work. But I'm smart enough to know that by myself the results would be only passable. I can usually tell at a glance when someone has done it himself.
