Aimee Semple McPherson was the model for Sharon Falconer in Sinclair Lewis's Elmer Gantry and and also the character Eli Watkins in Upton's Sinclair's Oil.
As someone who has long contemplated many dramatic inroads to the fascinating Aimee Semple McPherson over the past five years, I'm disappointed with Arlene's post. It doesn't really tell me how partisan Sutton's bio is, using specific examples, nor does it offer any alternative takes on how McPherson was received. This is a pity, because McPherson was indeed the first radio evangelist. And her story says everything about American media over the hundred years that have followed her death.
You know a good deal more about this than I do, Ed. Why don't you review the book somewhere - I even used to know a place that would have run that review.
