What a surprise ...

... I looked out the kitchen window this morning and saw one of these flitting about. At first I thought it was a white-throated sparrow, but then noticed there was no white throat, no dabs of yellow on the crown. I don't remember ever seeing one before.

  1. We have had a small group of these sparrows feeding at our window feeder for the past few weeks. We saw some a few years ago, but this is the first time they've showed up for an extended stay. They're great fun to watch.

  2. Lucky you, Frank - what a beauty. This is about the best we can do sparrow-wise in the UK, but they're charming birds and I'm lucky enough to have them in the neighbourhood.

  4. We live in Chicago right by the lake, without a lot of true wilderness nearby, and we ordinarily only get some sparrows, finches, doves, juncos, and the occasional cardinal at our feeder.

But this has been a great week for new visitors: not only have we had the sparrows you had, Frank, but we've also had our first sightings of wrens, catbirds, grosbeaks, and nuthatches.

What a treat they've been--maybe you have more on the way, too!
