Let's start ...

... with something heartwarming: Giles Coren's letter to Times subs. (Hat tip, Ed Champion.)

Well, he obviously hasn't had the experience of the guy who suffered the outsourcing of the copyediting to India.

Seriously, Giles Cohen should get a life. Get an online correction to the piece done, and leave it at that. You can bet your life the subs have saved his bacon on more than one occasion (that's the nature of subs and writers), and you won't see them writing a piece about it, because subs aren't like that.

This is much more important than the George Bush controversy you allude to in another recent post!

  2. I certainly agree that this is more important that whatever George Bush controversy that was. And of course I agree that this is ridiculously over-the-top. We've all be burned (usually mildly) by a copy editor on occasion, but saved so many other times. And the great good that copy editors do is always taken for granted. Bear in mind, I was one.

Couldn't argree [non sic] more with both of you; it's the reason why I love my editors (and take great conscientious care to thank them for making me look better than I thought I was, especially Jack Kirchhoff and Martin Levin) more than my most prized possession, a personally inscribed gift copy of Walls Can Fall from George Jones . . . almost :).

But, speaking of Cohen, I thought Sam Leith's take on the entire non-affaire a brilliant one*; and, although I agree with him concerning co-opting one of Cohen's more immemorable phrases, ISTM mine, once deployed in a poem concerning a pair of crack/pot heads, resonates with a masculinity the four-letter four-word phrase — Fuck. fuck. fuck. fuck. — lacks.

To wit: Fuck it. Fuck it. Fuck it.

    (And, don'tcha dare forget it.)
