Artist Nelson Shanks told me that when he was painting Lady Thatcher's portrait, one of the things that impressed him about her was her obvious self-discipline. Sitting for a portrait can be tiring. Once, when it was suggested she take a break for some tea, she declined. "We haven't earned it," she said.
