Barra is knowledgeable about Fleming and James Bond, and I agree with most of what he has written, but I'd like to offer a few remarks.
Fleming wrote that Bond was dark and cruelly handsome (Clive Owen should have the role, rather than Daniel Craig, in my view). Vesper Lynd thought that Bond looked like Hoagy Carmichael, but when Bond looked in a mirror later, he said to himself, "Not much Hoagy Carmichael there."
And the young Carmichael, circa 1952, was considered to be handsome.
My second comment is that Bond drove a sports car - the Aston Martin, sans machine guns and the ejector seat - in the novel "Goldfinger."
Bond was undercover as a young man on the make, and he drove the car to make an impression on Goldfinger. Often his cover required him to live well, as in "Casino Royale" and other novels.
I think that Craig did a good job in the film "Casino Royale," and I'm thankful that the producers are making Bond thrillers again.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new film, and my hope is that the film will create new readers for the classic Ian Fleming thrillers.
