Author Reaches Out to a New Generation
Set in the late '60s, Dark Dude
is a story not so far off autobiography. Like [Oscar] Hijuelos, the novel's hero Rico is a light-skinned Cuban-American kid living in Harlem. He feels the internal pain and suffers the relentless bullying that comes with being not black enough, not Hispanic enough for the ghetto.
