As for Nige's quiz, I lean toward (a). Attila already was laden with booty, so why settle for gold - even a lot - if you could just continue and get a lot, lot more besides? I suspect a tough guy like Attila may have been impressed by Leo's courage and took that - and the gold, of course - as sound pretexts for not overextending himself.
