James Adams tracks Through Black Spruce author to discover the Giller Guy's running on coffee and adrenalin.
Any of this year's nominees would have been a surprise winner in that all five short-listed positions were occupied by rookies and sophomores — in other words, writers virtually unknown to the wider public three or four years ago. But in going with Boyden the jurors did honour at least two Giller traditions — they went with an author who has an Ontario connection, either by birth or residency, (Boyden was raised in Willowdale) and a male author at that. In the 15 years of the Giller, only five first-place cheques have gone to women (and on two occasions it has been Alice Munro) and only two winners have been non-Ontarians (Montréal's Mordecai Richler in 1997 and Winnipeg's David Bergen in 2005).
(Kinda depres . . . mmffmmffffmmmm . . . nah . . . must not rain on anyone's parade . . . ffmmffmmmmffff . . ..)
