I heard a story once - I don't know whether it's true or not - that when the composer Engelbert Humperdinck came out to take a bow after the premiere of his opera Hansel and Gretel the audience broke out laughing. They just couldn't believe the guy standing in front of them could possibly have written the wonderful music they had just heard.
