Hélène Berr was 21 and attending the Sorbonne when she began keeping a journal. Starting on April 7, 1942, she wrote about her friends, her studies in English literature, and the "boy with the grey eyes," Jean Morawiecki, who would become her fiancé. A Jew, she also described Paris under the Nazi occupation.
