Toni Onley's Repeatedly Shattered Heart

Yukiko Onley puts her ex-husband Toni Onley's anguished letters on display: "'I knew Toni well,' she says. 'And one of the problems we had was that he lived a very public life — to him, there was not much difference between what was private and what was public.'"

The same may be said for the millions of contemporary anybodies populating our planet; the moment television and the telephone entered our homes, we were, as McLuhan noted, forced to go out (in our vehicles, predominantly) to find some time to be alone. (Just another of his renowned "reversals," this one involving the flipped nature of public and private space.)
