Waiting . . . Waiting . . .

. . . finally, with three entries left to round off The Globe and Mail's Fifty Greatest Books, guess who finally puts in an appearance? One of Canada's finest, Keith Garebian, writing on the off-chance you know who might be waiting for someone close to you. Estragon fishing? Took Vlad with him, too?

(Well, if it makes sense to Beckett, it makes sense to me/me.)

"Its language (rooted in Irish banter and song, Scripture and Beckett's own mundane experience) is demotic, scatological and dignified, silly, expository, and poetic."

See?

All bets are on: Try to ID what the remaining entries will be. (The entire list is on the same page. I'm just pissed Heart of Darkness ain't there . . . yet.)

    What, no Balzac?

  2. Georgy, you have an amazingly astute eye. I don't believe it myself. I'm waiting — er, pardon the punishment — to see who the final few shall be. Without Conrad, Balzac, and a couple others, poets specifically, that come readily to mind (Cavafy, Elytis, Milosz, et.al), what kind of list is this going to be? We'll have to [*ahem*] wait and see . . .

JSYK, the editors can't be faulted; it's the commentarians who had the final say. Not enough mentions of Conrad; that's what I heard :( . . .
