Whither grimalkin ...

... Nathaniel Hawthorne: Refreshingly Archaic. (Hat tip, Jeff McDonald.)

This is a really good account of what is involved in engaging with a great book. I also think that one of the pleasures of reading older books is precisely the richness of their language as compared with the frequent paucity of our own. The plain style has its limits and can be limiting.
