  1. He just became a frontrunner for the Nobel Prize in Literature. (Pardon my snark, but if this does happen to happen, it's looong overdue.)

  2. They don't give the Nobel to deceased authors, however. So he is out of the running.

  3. It is a tremendous shock, tremendous. John Updike is one of the writers -- one of the very few -- I considered to almost have been part of my life, for 50 years. I admire just about every thing he did -- his creations, his versatility, his range, his knowledge. If it wasn't literary genius, it was its next-door neighbor.

  4. You can't win it posthumously? I was pretty sure Faulker was dead when he accepted; just everybody thought he was alive 'cause he'd managed the rare feat of embalming himself, while still breathing, with alcohol.
