Politicians should be well-read, cultivated, thoughtful, active in society and, ideally, they should write or translate poetry. Above all, they should be part-time.
They should be amateurs, in the etymological sense. The opposite of the amateur isn't the professional but the mercenary. Politicians are, i fear, mercenaries.
Good point, elberry. And I fear you are right. The best thing that could happen in the world is for there to be a great revolt against - politics and politicians.
