I think Starbucks - as in any establishment - is what you make of it. I deliberately go at off-times ... which means less time spent standing in line, and more time spent chatting with the barrista behind the counter - many of whom I have found to be people of worth, and worth knowing.
Thank you for the wonderful link which took me to an important article about Marilyn Robinson's important contributions to American literature. In an increasingly secularized culture wherein thoughts and values get too easily skewed, the writings of Robinson (and my new discovery Garret Keizer) are an important corrective.
It depends on what you want. I regularly used the Starbucks in the B&N near my mum's place because I could sit there till 11:00 p.m. every evening, browse all the books on offer, and pick away on my laptop. And I got to eavesdrop on a lot of interesting/eyeopening/puzzling conversations.
