Add a special footnote to this sacred observance: Today is also Flannery O'Connor's birthday, and she would have been 84 today. In spite of some of her critics (especially the early ones) who found O'Connor's writing to be grotesque, bizarre, and incomprehensible, I continue to argue (with a few other recent critics) that O'Connor remains one of the strongest and most profound Catholic writers of the last two hundred or so years. In any event, Happy Birthday to Ms. O'Connor.
