Purpose is not the same as direction. The flowing stream meets obstacles and makes its way around them, gathers force and depth, and eventually arrives at the ocean. The course and force of its direction has absolutely nothing to do with purpose as commonly understood. In fact, the whole point of this piece seems to be to redefine purpose in such a way as to accommodate the theory of evolution - another example of being more interested in the theory than the reality the theory is supposed to be addressing.
