You will note that I have sent a note to Professor Myers and have asked for clarification. Perhaps his lead is more ironic that it seems. However, I'm not sure about his point. Perhaps I am being more than a little dense, though Prof. Myers occasionally loses and confuses me with his commentary (but I am intrigued by most of what he offers, especially his perspective on Bellow and other American Jewish novelists).
