Quite a lady ...

... Witness to three revolutions.

While the crowd of French émigrés wandered from country to country, lamenting their fate and alienating their hosts by their arrogance and pretensions, Lucie’s friendliness, simplicity and obvious devotion to her husband and children attracted sympathy in the most humble as in the most elevated settings. If she cared little for political or ideological issues, she was aware that the ineptitude and corruption of the old aristocracy had played a significant role in their downfall. While she was sensitive to the vulgarity and pushiness of the new ruling class brought to power by the Revolution, she also felt an instinctive sympathy for whatever real abilities and achievements they possessed.
