Thank you for posting Gide's brilliant observation. As I have told students when we talk about writers such as Gerard Manley Hopkins and Flannery Hopkins, readers must be aware of the connection (at least as the artist perceived it) between God and the artist. In my recent post on a Flannery O'Connor article, I take issue with another blogger's assertion that minimizes the connection between O'Connor's Catholicism (and her connections with God) and her writing; I intend to write more about the blogger's error in a future post (as I indicated), but now--thank you, Frank--you have given me one more arrow in my quiver for when I take on the task.
