Maybe not ...

... the right question: Is Tolstoy the greatest writer of all time?

I think one could argue that he is the greatest novelist - though I wouldn't, because I don't think there is any such. But greatest writer? That puts him up against Shakespeare, Dante, and Sophocles, to mention just three off the top of my head. Now, I could make a case for Anna Karenina being the greatest novel.
