The nearest I shall get ...

... to posting a pin-up: Any Excuse for a Saucy Painting...

I actually like Alma-Tadema. As Nige says, he is not a great a painter, but neither is he a bad one. There is one of his paintings at the Philadelphia Museum, A Reading From Homer, which I first saw when I was a teen (I would often rake the bus and el into Center City and make my way to the museum, which was free in those days, and just wander around and take in the paintings in my naive and ignorant way. This painting of Alma-Tadema's, which even I could tell was old-fashioned, transported me to some ancient Greece of the imagination. I still like the painting. It affects me the way an old song might.
