I think this review is a load of crap, and especially disagree that the book offers "no new revelations about the life or the music." What it offers is a very good explication of the life in terms of the music. That's what it purports to do and, in my view, succeeds in doing.
Not only that, Teachout's biography of Mencken was far inferior to Marion Rodgers's, or even Fred Hobson's.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't say, having read none of them. But I did read Pops and I've been listening to Armstrong since the 1940s, and I thought the book was well-written and insightful.
