Well, sure ...

... Don't be afraid of Wagner. He's not a Nazi.

It's true. He wasn't a Nazi, and you shouldn't be afraid of him. Though you may be bored by him, as I find I increasingly am. But he continues to have his passionate devotees. And that's fine.

  1. I'm with the great conductor Arturo Toscanini, who once said about Wagner:

"Wagner has some wonderful moments . . . and some dreadful half-hours."

  2. Dear Sir,

And I am among those passionate devotees, if we take him about 20-30 minutes at a time--or all of Die Meistersinger, The Flying Dutchman or Parsifal. The others are just way, way, way too much.

    shalom,

    Steven

  3. I confess to being rather fond of the Dutchman, and I have been moved by Parsifal. I don't think he is a bad composer. In fact, I agree that he is a great composer. I just don't think he is as great as has often been claimed, and he is not much to my taste.
