Children and raccoons ...

... `Their Whinnering at Night'.


“It is remarkable how many creatures live wild and free though secret in the woods, and still sustain themselves in the neighborhood of towns, suspected by hunters only."

This is still true. I used to see raccoons strolling down along the sidewalk very late at night outside my house in Germantown. Not so many years ago, on my way to work one morning, I saw one intreeoutside City Hall. And once, while walking to Chinatown for lunch, I saw a dead opossum on Vine Street. I even once encountered -- again, very late at night -- a pack of wild dogs.
