I think the Renaissance humanist offer the perfect model for an authentic community of intellectuals. There is a letter from Orlando di Lasso (or Roland de Lassus, or Orlandus Lassus, ash he was variously known) to the king of Spain (I think it was Ferdinand I), in which Lasso changes from French to Spanish to Italian to Latin, choosing the language that best expresses his thought. That's cosmopolitanism.
