Unclear all around ...

... John Gray on The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

A few things I think worth pointing out. First, Peter Kropotkin arrived at his theory of mutual aid from observation of wildlife in Siberia. He felt this was a corrective to both Darwin and Spencer. Second, a free market does not mean a lawless market anymore than a free society means one in which one is free to do whatever one damn pleases. The "turbocharged capitalism" Gray refers to is intimately and complexly involved with government (look up "lobbyists," John, or Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac). It is this collusion of the ruling class and the financial managers that is the problem, which is why the problem is so hard to fix. Those who would have the government deal with this problem fail to acknowledge that government is one of the perps.
