The child loves the names in the book for themselves alone, like "Ginnungagap," the void before the world was created, and "Yggdrasill," the giant ash tree that holds together the universe's nine separate worlds. She reads about the Wild Hunt, when Odin, the father of the gods, and his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, lead ghostly riders through the clouds "like monstrous starlings," followed by hounds and horns, thunder and lightning.
