Of one thing I feel certain: I had nothing to do with my being here. I do not merely mean that I owe my existence to my parents. I do, of course, but they had nothing to do with their being here, either. And so on, all the way back through my ancestry.
I happen to think I am being sustained in being by a loving God. My being here is a gift freely given, an act of grace. The terms of my being have not been set by me. I can only be  grateful that I am. As Meister Eckhart said, "If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough."
