… Pitcher perfect: The story behind Carlton’s amazing season in 1972.


Most remarkable … was that he won 27 games for a team that won only 59 the entire season. (Only one other pitcher in that last 40 years has won 27, the A's Bob Welch, during a season when Welch's team won the World Series.)In other words, Carlton - who finished 27-10 - accounted for 45.7 percent of his team's wins in 1972, a record that's unlikely to be ever be broken.
